A Study on the Determination of Nicotine in Contaminated Coffee by Gas Chromatography

Abstract
A study on micro-determination method for the nicotime contaminated in coffee was studied in view point of forensic chemistry.
For this purpose the nicotime was extracted from coffee with ether after application of steam distillation.
The residues were resolved in 1% ¥â-Naphthol ethyl acetate as internal reference and dertermined by gas chromatography using thermal condustivity detector supported on 3% SE-30 or 10% OV-1column.
The nicotine in contaminated coffee could be detected at a limit of 0.04 mg in a cup of coffee (approx. 75 ml) and the average recoveries were 90.6% with 0.34 of standard deviation.
In the meantime the coffee was collected from 100 of coffee shops in Seoul area especially in crowded region and determined for nicotime as the same method.
As a result, the nicotine was not detected throughout the all samples on the basis of gas chromatographic sensitivity.
